Spring Term
Autobiographical Portraits
For our art unit this term, we explored creative techniques that would help us to create expressive self-portraits. The unit introduced us to a variety of artistic techniques that make portrait drawing exciting, enjoyable and personal.
We looked at artists such as Mike Barrett, SNUB23 street art and John Wentz.
The portraits the children made are incredible!
Each one represents the person who drew it and each one is unique to that person's character. These are currently on display in school!
Shadow Puppet Theatre
MLK have been creating periscopes and creating shadow puppet theatre performances this week as part of our Fabulous Finish for our light topic!
We used cereal boxes and mirrors to reflect light around corners, helping us to become top-secret spies! Whilst we used our knowledge of shadows to perform traditional tales to Frida Kahlo Class!
Let there be light!
MLK have been looking at how our eyes work and how shadows are formed this week as part of our Light topic. They worked in groups to research different parts of the eye and created huge collages of inside the eye! We then had a visit from an optician who gave us more information on parts of the eye as well as answering our class questions about being colour blind, how contact lenses work and different coloured irises!
We also used our knowledge of shadows and went outside and designed miniature seating areas for a swimming pool and identified the best location for umbrellas to provide shade to guests! This helped us to answer our enquiry questions this week of how shadows are formed, what shapes shadows are and what affects their size.
Sports Crew Training
MLK had a PE coach come in and train them in organising and creating games for all children in the playground. Then, Sports Crew had their first session this week at playtime creating games for all the children. I can confirm, it was a huge success! Lots of children of all ages took part in the games. Well done to our Leaders!
Chocolate Workshop
MLK had an amazing chocolate workshop on Monday with a master chocolatier! The children learnt about the history of chocolate, how to make it and… even made some of their own! We also enjoyed using our senses (including taste) to describe chocolate and learning about where chocolate comes from.
County Lego League Tournament!
Our KS2 Lego Team attended the County Championships on Saturday at Caterpillar and Perkins in Peterborough. There were over 12 teams in attendance with some schools as far as Moulton! The children needed to compete in Robot battles where they had programmed and coded their robot to do certain tasks, present their project on renewable energy to a panel of judges and also share their posters, t-shirt designs and much more with other teams! The children were incredible ambassadors of Polebrook with many judges saying what a delightful group of children the were and they worked well as a team. So well in fact, we won the Teamwork trophy! This was one of the four main awards of the day! We are so proud of you all!
