Polebrook C E Primary School

Autumn 1

Our first big question this term is "What is the earth made of?"

We read the story "Everybody needs a rock" and went and hunted for our perfect rocks. We turned these into our very own rock pets and wrote a diary about their first day in class. We decided all the rocks had probably got together in the evening and had a party - some of the things in our classroom didn't look quite right in the morning and Mrs Bryant's chocolate had been eaten!

We became rock detectives and looked carefully at lots of different types of rocks and grouped them according to their properties. We also tested how durable they were and whether they were permeable.

For our fabulous finish the children turned the classroom into a rock cafe for their parents. They made edible versions of the different types of rocks and excavated their home made fossils.

Our final writing journey this term was explanation texts. The children were inspired by the book ‘street beneath my feet’ to make their own class text to answer our big question.
